Tips for a Bedtime Routine for Your Child’s Health and Development (And Your Sanity!)

If you read my blog pretty consistently, you most likely have read many times about how important a consistent bedtime routine is for your child (and for your sanity too!). So, let’s delve right into why this is one of my most common suggestions for parents to implement to help get their child’s sleep on track.

Why a Bedtime Routine?

Why is it essential to establish a consistent bedtime routine for your child?  Children thrive on routine, and a consistent bedtime routine can help them feel secure and comfortable, leading to better sleep. A bedtime routine also signals to your child and to their body and their brain that it is time to wind down and prepare for sleep. This is not just important for our toddlers and school aged children, but babies as well.
Establishing a consistent routine can have several benefits for your child’s health and development. One of the most significant benefits is improved sleep. Children who have a consistent bedtime routine are more likely to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. This can prove beneficial as they are less likely to experience night waking, nightmares, and other sleep disturbances. In addition to improving sleep, a consistent bedtime routine can also have positive effects on your child’s behavior and emotional well-being. Children who have a consistent bedtime routine are more likely to have better emotional regulation, less anxiety, and less depression. They also have better attention and are less likely to exhibit behavioral problems. If you are looking for more on toddler sleep, check out this blog post.

How to establish a routine

Establishing a consistent bedtime routine is actually quite simple, and it greatly depends on you, the parent or caregiver to make sure that it is consistent every night.  This routine should include activities that signal to your child that it is time to wind down and prepare for sleep. A successful bedtime routine for a toddler should be consistent, calming, and predictable and could go something like this:

  1. Brush Teeth
  2. Bath
  3. Into Pajamas
  4. Story Time
  5. Song and Cuddle
  6. Into Bed Lights Out
It is important to choose activities that your child enjoys and that help them wind down, avoiding activities that are too stimulating or can affect their melatonin levels, such as watching television or playing video games, as these can make it difficult for your child to fall asleep. Older children may have a more structured routine that includes a set bedtime and a specific order of activities. It is essential to involve your child in creating their bedtime routine, as this can help them feel more in control and invested in the process.

Routines for infants

Infants can have a simpler routine:

  1. Bath
  2. Bedtime Feed
  3. Story Time
  4. Quick Cuddle and Song
  5. Into Bed Awake

Every Night!

Maintaining a consistent bedtime routine can be challenging, but there are several tips that can help.

  1. It is essential to be consistent with the time that your child goes to bed and wakes up. This consistency can help your child’s body clock get into a routine, making it easier for them to fall asleep and wake up.
  2. It is also essential to be consistent with the activities included in your child’s bedtime routine. These activities should be calming and predictable, and should not change from night to night.
  3. Keep the routine between 20- 30 minutes long.  Too short and the body does not get the cue that it is time for sleep, too long and the body forgets that it is time for sleep.

Bedtime Battles

Bedtime battle can creep up when establishing and maintaining a bedtime routine. If your child is resistant to the routine, it may be helpful to involve them in the process of creating the routine.  I suggest having them help you create a Bedtime Routine Chart for their room.  This can help them visualize the steps of the routine every night and make it fun for them.

Another challenge is their sleep schedule.  If your baby, toddler or older child is struggling in the bedtime routine, it is very likely that they are overtired or under-tired, which can cause resistance.  Make sure that they are on the appropriate schedule and getting enough sleep each night.  Need the right schedule, download my Awake Windows Cheat Sheet here.

Keep it consistent!

Consistency is essential in establishing and maintaining a successful bedtime routine. Children thrive on routine, and a consistent bedtime routine can help them feel secure and comfortable, leading to better sleep.

It is essential to be consistent with the time that your child goes to bed and wakes up, as well as the activities included in their bedtime routine.
